Gustavo Fallas was born in Costa Rica. He studied theatre at the Conservatorio Castella and cinema at La Universidad de Quebec, La Femis, and the Fundación Carolina y Casa de América. He directed the shorts La piñata (05), Variaciones sobre un mismo crimen (98) and Atrapar un ruiseñor (05). Puerto padre (13) is his first feature.
This neo-realist tale of a 16-year-old orphan traveling from his Chira Island home in search of a father who may not exist gives plenty of reasons to despair, yet there is something in Puerto padre, in its quiet integrity, in its belief in self-determination, that keeps urging us to hope for the best.
